The Gervin House c.1845

Bedroom Renovation with Vintage Boxing Theme

Small Bedroom

This bedroom is the smallest bedroom in the house, but it is still a good size space. The door is at the end of the hallway so as you enter, there’s a narrow area that opens up to the larger space. There are 3 small original frieze windows along the front of the house and another window at the end of the room. The closet spanned across the back wall made from wood panels that were added probably in the 1950’s. The flooring is the same as the rest of the upstairs, a narrow 2 inch hardwood.

Renovation Planning and Demo

This room needed mostly cosmetic work, but we wanted to add a bathroom to the second floor. In order to do that, we needed to take some of the space from the closet side closest to the hallway and move the wall into the room a couple feet. Since that meant that we had to remove the paneling, we decided to reuse the paneling in the other Bedroom to create a larger closet in that room. And since we were removing the wall, we decided to remove the ceiling so that we could raise it up higher. All the original windows were restored.

Floors

The flooring was in good condition, but the finish had worn in most areas. There was a hole from an old stove pipe that was covered by a metal sign that says “little beauty shop” and a patch where an old chimney was. We saved the little sign and used it later in the bathroom! Edward feathered in flooring to seamlessly fill and blend the patches. Then we rented a sander and sanded the floors down. Even though we did this in the other bedroom, it never ceases to amaze me how different the floor looks before and after.

Finishing

We designed this room for Edward’s youngest kiddo who loves boxing. We had him pick out a few different colors that he liked, but surprised him with which color we used and the theme. We chose this red color (Benjamin Moore- Mayflower) for the trim since most of the other colors in the house have been blue and green tones, we wanted to contrast those, but still use something that compliments the rest of the house. We made the hanging light from an old pulley and ball jars. Edward made the bench seat/radiator cover out of salvaged house materials and the knickknack shelf is made from old wood boxes. We surprised Edward’s son with the room and he loves it!! And so do we!
